| I became interested in Cardinal Van Thuan ever since I watched The Road of Hope. Hope has always grabbed my attention because I noticed that the people who become great saints never lose hope. I also noticed that people who don’t have faith or love, still usually have hope. These were a few of the many reasons that I made hope the subject of my research paper for school. I learned while writing this paper though that while faith and love are very different for each person, hope is something that doesn’t change. Hope is the remedy for despair. The first time we watched the movie as a family I was amazed that someone could suffer so much and still have faith in God. So when my mom showed us our invitation for the closing of Cardinal Van Thuan’s cause for sainthood and told us we were going I was very excited. The day after we arrived we went to the opening mass which was an amazing experience. Even though it was hard to understand, I really enjoyed the music and thought it was beautiful that so many people came f-rom around the world to celebrate the life of Cardinal Van Thuan. Attending the formal ceremony helped me to appreciate all the work that had been done by others in order for someone to be considered a saint. The concert in his honor was not your normal teenage concert but was filled with joyful music that seemed more to honor a friend than a formal event. I think Cardinal Van Thuan would have enjoyed it very much. The next morning I was nervous because I knew we’d be meeting Pope Francis. When we arrived at the Vatican we had to walk up a long distance and up several flights of stairs. People were all trying to make their way to the front of the line and it was very hot. We were then lead into a room that was covered in beautiful paintings and sat down. About five minutes later Pope Francis walked in the room and everyone started clapping. Seeing the pope in person was so different then seeing him in pictures or videos. He talked to everyone in Italian, and even though I only speak English, it was amazing to hear the Pope speaking to me. Time went fast and before I knew it he was gone, but you don’t get to meet the pope every day and it will be something I never forget. The final mass was held at Cardinal Van Thuan’s church in Rome and was very cool. There were so many priests celebrating the mass and the music was amazing. All the guests participated in some special way, either singing in the choir or assisting in the mass. Being there in person made me experience the joy that hope brings to God’s people. I’m glad I was able to attend the closing of the cause for Cardinal Van Thuan, it will an experience that my family and I will remember forever. Maggie Jensen |
